Test Requirements

It is important to become proficient in English to make your stay in New Zealand a good one. You will probably be required to take the International English Language Testing System(IELTS) before you will be admitted to a New Zealand university. The school may also have additional tests for graduate students who are prospective teaching assistants.

Language Requirements »

The language of instruction in New Zealand is English, except at Maori institutions. Your institution will therefore want to know whether your English skills are adequate for the course of study you are applying for.

Tertiary institutions will ask for original documents or certified photocopies of one of the following:

  • An IELTS (International English Language Testing System) band score of 6 with no band less than 5.5. IELTS is used at many tertiary institutions in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and North America. It assesses your ability to read, write, speak and listen in academic or general training contexts. It is developed and managed by the University of Cambridge, the British Council and IDP Education Australia.
  • A pass in English in the GCE (General Certificate of Education) ‘O’ level examination
  • A TOEFL (Princeton Test of English as a Foreign Language) paper test (not the computer test) score of 550 and a TWE (Test of Written English) score of 4 (paper-based test) or 213, Essay rating 4.0 (Computer-based test)

Administered by IELTS is administered by University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate (UCLES), British COuncil and IDP Education Australia.

Requirements for Registration Name as in the Passport, Passport, 4 Photographs, Address, Demand Draft or Pay Order. If the date is not available the Demand Draft or Pay Order is sent back.

Resheduling Test can be rescheduled prior to 3 working days prior to the test. The necessary rescheduling fee has to be paid.
Mode The IELTS test is a paper-based test.
NUMBER OF TESTS : Maximum 1 test can be given in 3 months at any Center.
Duration The test is for 2 hours & 45 minutes.
SCORE : Total score is out of 9 Bands.Scoring is between 0-9.
Test Reports Duplicate of test report is charged Rs.150. Normal service takes 2 weeks to get the best report. Express service(results after working days of test date) collected personally or by courier is charged Rs.1000.
